Sodium silicate production is tough on pH sensors. To ensure reliable measurements, regular cleaning and calibration is vital.
A European facility of a large global chemical corporation produces sodium silicate, but the excessive time involved in keeping pH sensors clean and calibrated was causing frustration. Monitoring pH in the process can be very challenging and requires continuous care of the pH sensors if reliable measurements are to be maintained. The biggest issue is the fact that silicon dioxide is the main component of glass and it tends to build-up on and bind itself to the glass membrane of pH sensors.

The pH sensor from METTLER TOLEDO for tough processes such as sodium silicate production, is the InPro 2000i. This probe allows refilling of electrolyte and can be pressurized to ensure electrolyte outflow and maintain high measurement accuracy. The installed transmitter is the M400 2-wire; a loop-powered instrument with HART capability. The M400 supports all ISM features and provides continuous access to advanced predictive sensor diagnostics through both the display and the HART protocol.
ISM’s iSense software provides important glass impedance data that enables the customer to decide how much cleaning each sensor requires.
Thanks to ISM and the features of the InPro 2000i, time spent on pH sensor maintenance at the plant has been reduced enormously.
