Measurements of Pore Size Distribution with DSC

This article shows that DSC isothermal step melting is a good way to determine pore size distribution. Pores with diameteres of up to 430 nm can be determined with this method. The measurement is easy to perform and is suitable for many different types of samples. The method can be easily optimized for maximum resolution or shortest measurement time by setting the size of temperature increments accordingly. DSC allows the measurement of moist samples, which is very advantageous for the investigation of hydrogels such as cellulose fibers because gas sorption or mercury porosimetry requires dry samples.
