Conditions

Measuring Cell: DSC20

Pan: Aluminum standard 40µl, pierced lid

Sample preparation: Disk cut from pellet

DSC measurement: Heating from 30 to 200ºC at 10 K/min

Atmosphere: Nitrogen 50 cm3/min

Conclusion

The DSC melting peaks of PE-HD of different quality show characteristic differences. To eliminate effects due to individual thermal history, the samples should have been pre-melted and recrystallized at 10 K/min. In addition, the sample masses should be more uniform, e.g. 5±2 mg. The peak width in particular depends on the sample mass (increasing mass → increasing melting time→ broader peak).
