Case Study at Spanish API manufacturer Uriach Group

Sensors for tissue engineering
Sensors for tissue engineering

Spain’s Uriach Group is a family-owned pharmaceutical company in the business of improving the health, life quality and well-being of people around the world. The company has two business areas: consumer healthcare (OTC and natural care products) and business to business (includes generics, NCEs and others, and contract manufacturing). The company was founded in 1838 in Barcelona, and is the second-oldest laboratory in Europe. Uriach currently has 900 professionals working at two production centers in Barcelona. Urquima,Uriach’s API factory, planned four new reactors, which required on-line analytical equipment that would operate reliably in the harsh conditions in pharma production.

METTLER TOLEDO was asked to offer solutions for pH, conductivity and oxygen gas measurement for the reactors that would provide accurate measurements and keep technician exposure to the process conditions to a minimum, while performing under harsh conditions.

The METTLER TOLEDO portfolio of sensors and housings is available in a range of materials and lengths to meet all demands. With the additional benefits of Intelligent Sensor Management (ISM®) technology, METTLER TOLEDO was confident of meeting Urquima’s requirements.

ISM is METTLER TOLEDO's digital sensor technology that combines the advantages of in-line analytical measurements with modern technology, and is highly suited to the harsh conditions in pharma production. Among its many features, ISM monitors probe “health” and predicts when sensor calibration, cleaning, and replacement should be performed. All system data, including calibration and diagnostics information, are stored on the sensors. With ISM, the process parameter value is calculated directly in the sensor, resulting in higher measurement accuracy than analog probes, to give you greater assurance in your processes. ISM sensors can be quickly and precisely calibrated away from the process in any suitable location.
