What are Nonylphenoly Ethoxylates (NPEs)?

Nonylphenol Ethoxylates (NPEs) comprise a category of surfactants widely used in industrial cleaning products, processes, agricultural formulations and paints. The NPE reaction product is produced by combining Nonylphenol with Ethylene Oxide. The ratio of Ethylene Oxide to Nonylphenol determines the molecular weight of the product and the length of the molecule produced.

Importance of the Cloud Point of NPEs

For water-soluble NPE surfactants, the Cloud Point is a reliable measure to check the nature and quality of the NPE reaction product. The Cloud Point of a solution corresponds to the temperature above which a sample becomes turbid. The change in turbidity is detected fully automatically using the MP80 Melting Point System. Duplicate Cloud Point measurements provide additional reliability of results and increase throughput.

With this application note, you will learn how to determine the cloud point of NPE surfactants using METTLER TOLEDO’s Melting Point System MP80.
