Automated Two-Phase Titration Using DP5 Phototrode

The application note describes the analysis  based on classical Epton's method, alsoknown as the two-phase titration where the anionic surfactant is titrated with a cationic surfactant in the presence of methylene blue as an indicator in a water/chloroform two-phase medium. This method of titration is also mentioned in ASTM D1681 and ISO 2271.

Background

Anionic surfactants are used in various formulations, raw products, liquid detergents, cosmetic products, lubricants, cooling emulsions etc. They are considered as one of the environmental contaminants. Hence, analysis of surfactant is an important quality criterion in production.

In the application note (download above), the content of anionic surfactant in a liquid detergent sample is determined by titration with a cationic surfactant, Benzethonium chloride (Hyamine®1622). After each titrant addition, the mixture is stirred vigorously to allow reaction between anionic and cationic surfactant molecules in two-phase solvent system. The color change is monitored in organic phase.

The precise color changes at equivalence point and endpoint of the titration are monitored using the DP5 Phototrode.
