Simultaneous Determination of Blank and Titer Using Magnesium Chloride

This application note describes the thermometric determination of the titer of ethylenediamine-tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and of the blank value using magnesium chloride (MgCl2) as the primary standard.

Background

The chelating agent, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), has applications in various segments, such as analytical chemistry, industry, medicine and cosmetics etc. Its capability of complexing different kind of metal ions makes him the substance of choice to dissolve limescale, to reduce the water hardness or to treat heavy metal poisoning. In analytical chemistry, EDTA is used as titrants in the analysis of calcium, magnesium, zinc and other metal ions. It is also used to mask metal ions during the analysis of other substances.

The change in heat of formation of the metal-EDTA complex is large enough to be followed by thermometric  titration. The titer and blank value are determined usingan  InMotion™ autosampler and a Thermotrode™.
