In Ohio, Henry Theobald watched merchants struggle with unreliable scales and created a new way to weigh with confidence. In Switzerland, Erhard Mettler crafted a balance so precise it changed laboratory work forever.

Decades later, their companies came together as METTLER TOLEDO, joining retail honesty with scientific accuracy.

Our portfolio has expanded into a comprehensive suite of analytical instrumentation and process analytics, alongside high-performance pipettes and automated chemistry systems that drive modern discovery.

We have further bridged the gap between the lab and the production floor. We do this by integrating product inspection technologies, including world-class metal detection and X-ray, with industrial weighing and high-speed dimensioning solutions.

A Journey in Precision

The Birth of Honest Weight

The Toledo Scale Company introduces the first automatic computing scales, replacing manual weighing with accuracy, giving buyers and sellers a shared trust reference in everyday transactions.

Recovery and Reinvention after the First World War

By 1928, Toledo Scale had transformed from an ambitious startup into a mature industrial force. It had survived a world war, adapted to an evolving economy, and entered a decade hungry for modernization and innovation.

Laying Foundations for the Future

The Toledo Scale Company focuses on strategic growth by consolidating scattered facilities into a modern, centralized plant. Its completion in 1939 represents a major accomplishment and reflects the company’s recovery and resilience from the economic difficulties of the Great Depression.

The Conflict Ends and A New Era Begins

During World War II, the company supported military efforts by providing various specialized scales for tasks like spring testing and more. By 1945, demand did not slow. Retailers and manufacturers now wanted modernization all at once. The flood of orders that followed was unlike anything Toledo had seen.

A Breakthrough in Weighing Precision

In a small Swiss workshop, Erhard Mettler invents a single-pan balance that replaces a century-old technology. By late 1946, he had built two prototypes and by the early 1950s his innovate instrument is used across the world from Buenos Aires to Hong Kong.

Science Begins to Demand More

Scientific advances demand more precise and efficient laboratory instruments. Mettler’s engineers created the world’s first commercial thermogravimetric analyzer combined with differential thermal analysis. Introduced in 1964 as the TA1, it quickly became a foundational tool in materials science, polymers, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

The Electronic Shift Takes Hold

Electronics were beginning to find their way into laboratories, factories, and commercial environments, quietly but decisively rewriting performance expectations. In 1973 Mettler introduces their first precision electronic balance based on electromagnetic force compensation. It was a technical milestone. Laboratories could now perform analyses with speed and clarity, that had previously been unimaginable.

Two Legacies Become One

In 1992, the decision was made to formally unite Mettler and Toledo, following Ciba-Geigy's acquisition of Toledo three years earlier. In 1997, Mettler Toledo International Inc. became a publicly traded company on the NYSE. This marked the completion of a transformation that had begun nearly two decades before with Ciba-Geigy’s acquisition of Mettler.

The World Connects, Service Follows

The world of the 2000s was more interconnected than ever. Companies with production sites across multiple continents expected uniformity no matter the location. METTLER TOLEDO expanded its global footprint, strengthening its Service teams in over 100 countries. The company also standardizes calibration procedures to ensure that customers receive consistent support from installation through ongoing maintenance.

Over a Century of Innovation

Honest Weight in Ohio

At the start of the twentieth century, everyday trade still depended on trust. Grocers weighed goods on a basic scale, moved metal weights by hand and called out the price. Allen DeVilbiss Jr. saw the opportunity to improve this process and invented an automatic computing scale showing precise weight and price.

A local businessman, Henry Theobald, saw the invention's potential to bring transparency to commerce. In 1901, he founded the Toledo Computing Scale and Cash Register Company. Theobald's promise, “No Springs, Honest Weight,” propelled Toledo Scale's growth across America, establishing the scales as symbols of fairness.

Innovation That Changed How the World Weighs

As shops, factories, and food production scaled rapidly, so did the need for accuracy. The Toledo Scale Company responded with new technologies. These included cylinder scales for butchers, portable scales for factories, floor scales for heavy goods, and print weigh systems that produced tickets on the spot.

By the 1930s, a small Toledo shop operation had become the world’s largest maker of automatic scales, trusted because they were engineered, serviced, and sold with honesty at their core.

A New Vision for Precision

In 1945, in a small workshop near Lake Zurich, Swiss engineer Erhard Mettler created a new balance with just one pan. This design replaced the fragile two-pan system with built-in precision weights and specialized mechanics.

The new balance was small, fast, and easy to use, quickly improving laboratory work. Initially met with skepticism, it soon gained users' trust. Chemists who used it found their work simpler and their results more reliable.

Two Journeys Converge

By the 1980s, the two companies had evolved in different directions, one shaping global laboratory precision, the other driving accuracy in retail, logistics, and industrial weighing.

Yet they shared the same core belief that measurement carries responsibility. Their paths finally came together when the Mettler organization acquired the Toledo Scale business. Three years later, the combined company became a single global entity under the name of METTLER TOLEDO.

Expanding Our Offerings

Over time, we have expanded beyond weighing to support a wider range of scientific and industrial needs. The portfolio has grown to include analytical instruments, process analytics, metal detection, X-ray inspection, pipettes, automated chemistry solutions, and dimensioning systems. Each addition addressed where precision was needed next, inside laboratories, along production lines, and across logistics. This enables customers to measure, monitor, and control critical processes with greater confidence and consistency.

A Journey Through Growth and Innovation

Before our 1989 merger, both organizations were already expanding the "Honest Weight" promise to ensure accuracy in every environment. Mettler deepened its reach through Sauter precision balances and retail scales, Ingold process sensors, and Garvens checkweighing. Toledo Scale expanded its presence across the industrial floor with Masstron heavy-duty scales and Hi-Speed inspection systems, providing the rugged accuracy required for large-scale manufacturing.

Following the merger, we reinforced our weighing leadership with OHAUS balances. We then integrated Safeline to protect production lines with metal detection and Bohdan and Myriad to automate the complexities of drug discovery. By 2000, we expanded our industrial reach through Testut electronic scales, Cargoscan automated dimensioning for logistics, and Thornton precision water analytics to support critical infrastructure.

In 2001, we reached a major milestone in life sciences with the acquisition of Rainin, putting us at the forefront of high-precision liquid handling. Our laboratory offering was further expanded to support research workflows through Lasentec particle analysis, Biotix consumables, Troemner calibration weights, Hermle centrifuges, and Genie mixers.

To support production safety, we added CI-Vision machine vision and Eagle X-ray inspection. Today, we continue to lead the way in biopharmaceutical monitoring with PendoTECH single-use sensors.

Growth to Meet Our Customer's Needs

1971-1987

Expansion of Mettler’s Scientific Capabilities

Mettler Instruments AG strengthens its laboratory and industrial expertise through the integration of Sauter, Ingold, and Garvens, expanding sensors, materials testing, and dynamic weighing.

1980

Ciba-Geigy Acquires Mettler

Mettler Instruments AG becomes part of Ciba-Geigy AG, gaining global reach and long-term stability to support continued innovation.

1981–1987

Expansion of Toledo’s Industrial Portfolio

Toledo Scale expands its industrial capabilities by acquiring Hi-Speed Checkweigher Co., Inc. in 1981, a U.S. specialist in in-line weighing systems, and Masstron in 1986, a family-owned business focused on heavy-capacity and vehicle weighing products.

1989-1992

Merger of Mettler and Toledo

In 1989, Ciba-Geigy buys Toledo Scale from Reliance Electric. In 1992, Mettler and Toledo merged, combining laboratory precision and industrial strength into a unified global organization.

1997

Expansion into Metal Detection

The acquisition of Safeline extends capabilities into metal detection, strengthening product inspection solutions for foods and pharmaceutical applications.

2000s

Expansion of Laboratory and Process Capabilities

Acquisitions including Rainin, Lasentec, Cargoscan, Thornton, and CI-Vision significantly expanded our liquid handling, process analytics, verification, and vision-based inspection capabilities.

2010s

Strengthening Analytical and Inspection Solutions

Eagle, Troemner, and Biotix enhance our portfolio with X-ray inspection, precision calibration weights, and laboratory consumables to strengthen our product safety and life science workflows.

2020s

Focus on Bioprocessing and Advanced Applications
