Sample Storage and Hygroscopic Effects

Sample

Hygroscopic active ingredient

Application

Flavoring agent

Conditions

Measuring cellTGA850 with sample robot

Pan: Aluminum 40 µl, with perforation lid, automatically pierced (needle diameter 1 mm)

Sample preparation: Sample 1 weighed out, pan sealed, lid automatically pierced; Sample 2 weighed out, pan sealed, lid automatically pierced and stored isothermally for 14 hours before measurement at 30 °C in the TGA

TGA measurement: Heating from 30 °C to 250 °C at 20 K/min, all measurements are blank curve corrected

Atmosphere: Nitrogen, 80 cm3/min

Interpretation

The substance is very hygroscopic. Special protective measures must be taken for the transport, storage, processing and analysis of the substance. Changes in the moisture content can be rapidly detected with TGA, provided that suitable precautions are taken for the analysis itself. In this particular case, sample 2 took up additional moisture during the storage time, which is the reason for the different results.

Conclusion

It is possible to measure even very hygroscopic substances using sealed pans with lids that are pierced immediately before the measurement.
