Decomposition, Hydrocortisone

SampleHydrocortisone

Hydrocortisone

Application

Active ingredient

Conditions

Measuring cell: TG50

Pan: Alumina 70 µl

Sample preparation: As received, no preparation

DSC measurement: Heating from 25 °C to 800 °C at 20 K/min, blank curve corrected

Atmosphere: Air, 200 cm3/min

Interpretation

The decomposition of this substance, which takes place in several steps can be measured with TGA. The derivative curve is helpful in making the steps more evident.

Evaluation

Weight loss is shown on the TGA curve with horizontal tangents. The limits used for the determination are set by making use of the DTG curve.

 Step, %Evaluation range, °C
Step 112.0175-285
Step 283.2285-538
Step 33.4538-690

Conclusion

With TGA, the individual weight losses can be quantified. Additional analytical methods must be used, however, in order to determine the type of reaction or the nature of the evolved substances.
