High Temperature Polymers

Sample

Polyetheretherketone, PEEK Victrex 450G, injected-molded
Polyethersulfone, PES Victrex 200P, injection-molded
Polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE film supplied in the sample set of the "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutsche Kunststoff-Industrie"

Conditions

Measuring cell: DSC821e with air cooling

Pan: Aluminum standard 40 µl, pierced lid

Sample preparation: Disks cut from injection-molded parts or punched from film

DSC measurement: Heating from 30 to 400 °C at 20 K/min

Atmosphere: Nitrogen, 50 cm3/min

Evaluation

Interpretation

PES is completely amorphous and shows only the glass transition (one of the highest of all organic materials). At room temperature, PEEK and PTFE are semicrystalline and cannot be frozen in the glass state by quench-cooling from melt in the sample robot (the mean cooling rate is about 3000 K/min when the robot places the hot pan on the cold turntable).

Conclusions

The high sensitivity (low signal noise level of the DSC821e allows weak effects to be easily measured. This means that new polymers synthesized in research laboratories can be rapidly characterized with respect to their thermal behavior by DSC.
