IO-Link is an open standard serial communication protocol that enables bi-directional exchange of data from IO-Link sensors and devices. The IO-Link sensors are connected to an IO-Link Master, which can transmit this data over various ethernet-based networks or fieldbuses to industrial control systems (PLC, DCS, etc.).  Each IO-Link sensor has an IODD (IO-Link Device Description) file that describes the device settings and "smart capabilities".
