What is the difference between gold scale and a carat scale?

Weighing diamonds and other gemstones requires higher accuracy than weighing gold and silver. Moreover, the reading is different. The gold scale shows the result by default in kilograms (kg), grams (g), milligrams (mg), while the carat scale shows the weight in carat (ct). Therefore, the readability
of a carat balance is 0.001 ct (0.1mg) and the one of a gold balance is 1 milligram or less. To achieve the higher accuracy on a carat scale, it is always equipped with a wind shield to eliminate any external influence like air flow. This is not required for a gold scale with 0.01 g readability or less.

How do I weigh gemstones or diamonds?

The quality and the market price of a diamond are determined by the 4 Cs: Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat, which is the weight.

The weight is measured in carat (ct), where one ct equals 0.2 g. Due to the small weight and the high price of diamonds, the accuracy of the weighing result must be very high and normally is required with a readability of 0,001ct.

Gemstones, especially diamonds, are very precious, but also rather small. Therefore, Mettler-Toledo always ships a so-called carat bowl with its carat balances. This carat bowl is placed on the weighing pan and tared. Afterwards one or several stones can be added to the carat bowl.

How do I weigh gold or silver?

Gold and silver is normally placed directly on the weighing pan to measure their weight. Moreover, the weight can go up to almost 15 kg for e.g. a gold bar. Therefore it is important to have a very robust balance, including its weighing pan.

For both materials the reading should be in kilograms, grams, penny weight (dwt) or any other country specific measuring unit. For Gold the readability should be ≤ 0,01g, for Silver ≤ 0,1g.

What is the difference between carat in gold weighing and carat in diamond weighing?

Carat has two meanings, for gold it is the pureness of the material e.g. 24 carat gold means 99,99% gold content.

For Diamonds it is the weighing measurement unit: 1 carat (ct) equals 2 grams (g). For example a two carat diamond has a weight of 0,4 g. As the weighing unit carat is directly derived from the gram, it is also a metric unit, while some country specific units used for weighing gold and silver
(e.g. penny weight (dwt)) are non-metric units.

When do I need a legal for trade version of a gold or carat scale?

The goal of legal metrology is to ensure fair trade and to protect consumers. When the scale is used in trade or a legally controlled application, it must be set up, verified and sealed in accordance with local Weights & Measures regulations.

For Jewelry Balances and Scales this is typically the case in a retail or wholesale application, when a legal for trade version of your gold or carat balance is required. However, please investigate your local law with your local Weight & Measures authorities. All METTLER TOLEDO Jewelry Balances and Scales can be supplied as legal for trade scale. As every country has slightly different specifications regarding legal for trade balances, please make sure you order and use only a version that complies with the regulations in your country.

How to calibrate a gold or carat scale?

Periodic equipment calibration is the first step to accurate and reliable results. Calibration is all about confidence in measurement results. Balance calibration ensures that weighing equipment is accurate and reaches standards such as ISO, GLP/GMP, IFS, and BRC. Documented calibration procedures indicate the quality of measurements, and should be performed regularly throughout the balance’s lifetime. Calibration should not be confused with adjustment of a balance, and must be repeated after adjustment/repairs. Balance and Scale Calibration

How do I clean the gold or carat balance?

Clean the weighing pan and housing of your balance regularly, using a disposable tissue. The weighing pan and draft shield panels can be cleaned with a damp cloth or soft paper tissue and a mild detergent. Your balance is made from high-quality, resistant materials and can therefore be cleaned with a commercially available, mild cleaning agent. Use common cleaning agents such as 70% ethanol or isopropanol, or mild detergents. Draft shield panels are made of glass and can be cleaned with a mild detergent or commercial glass cleaner. The weighing pan and bottom plate are made of stainless steel which is robust and chemically resistant, with the exception that it is not compatible with strong acids. Acetone should not be used, even for highly sticky substances, as it is not compatible with plastic handles, glued parts or the screen
