Free Formaldehyde Content in Resins

Determination using automated Titration in accordance to ISO 11402

The application note describes the determination of free formaldehyde content in resin sample by the:

  •  Hydroxylamine hydrochloride method, an acidbase titration using DGi113-SC non-aqueous sensor
  •   Sulfite method, a redox titration using DM143- SC

Hydroxylamine hydrochloride method is suitable for phenolic resins, furan resins and sulfite method is suitable for urea, melamine and furan resins.

Background:

Formaldehyde resins are generally used in polymer and textile industries as adhesive, finishes and molded objects etc. These resins are obtained by condensation reactions with formaldehyde. The performance, strength and water resistance ability of such resins is affected by the free formaldehyde content. In addition, formaldehyde emission is strictly regulated by various standards in formaldehyde resin based adhesives. Hence, determination of free formaldehyde in resins is important.

In ISO 11402, three different methods are described for determination of free formaldehyde content in phenolic, amino and condensation resins :

  • Hydroxylamine hydrochloride method
  • Sulfite method
  • KCN method

This method is developed using an automated titration system Excellence Titrator
