What is a weighbridge and how does it work?

A weighbridge, also known as a truck scale, is system of several components that work together to provide weight readings when a truck drives on to the scale. Comprised of a foundation, bridge or deck, load cell system, terminal, and any accessories. These parts work together to provide a weight that can be used for a monetary transaction, inventory tracking, and to check legal weight limits for off-road and over-the-road travel. Weighbridges/truck scales can range in size to accommodate the small farmer, to multi-national aggregate facilities.

How often should I calibrate my weighbridge?

The frequency of weighbridge calibration will vary from site to site, and is heavily influenced by usage. A truck scale seeing 50 trucks per day will not need calibrated as often as one seeing 400 trucks per day. Additionally the environmental conditions can play a role in how often a scale needs calibrated. The best way to determine the need at your site is to schedule a health check with a METTLER TOLEDO service technician. Based off the results of your check and the information you are able to provide on usage they can make a recommendation on calibration and other preventative maintenance procedures.

Are junction boxes prone to failure?
These small boxes cause big problems. They must be opened to calibrate and service the weighbridge, allowing moisture and other debris to eventually compromise the sensitive connections and circuitry inside. No matter how well-sealed these boxes are designed to be, they remain the most frequent cause of weighbridge problems. Should I use analog or digital load cells?
Conventional analog load cells are known to have a limited lifespan in weighbridges. A dead load cell can be tricky to diagnose and expensive to replace, requiring a laborious procedure that includes recalibrating the weighbridge. What can I do about lightning strikes at my weighbridge?
A single lightning strike can cause devastating damage to load cells, cables, junction boxes, and the terminal, even in weighbridges with substantial grounding features. My region is prone to wet conditions, what can I do?
Rain, ice, snow, and humidity are the enemy of many weighbridge components, causing harm to the load cell connections. The entire POWERCELL PDX load cell system is submersible, with approvals for IP68 and IP69K wash downs - rain is no problem.

If I experience cable failure, do I have to replace the whole load cell?
Cables can be damaged as a result of failed anti-rotation features that allow the load cell to slowly spin, wrapping the cable around the cell, and pulling on the cable. Rodents also have a habit of “testing” load cell cables with their teeth. When a traditional analog load cell experiences damage, the entire cell must be replaced. With PDX's stainless steel shrouded cables a breakage is unlikely, but if it does occur it can simply be detached by the unique glass to metal locking system. Replacing only a cable is much less expensive than replacing an entire load cell.
