The increasing market of consumer electronics, smartphones, and electric vehicles is pushing battery research forwards to provide safer, lower-cost, and lightweight/high-capacity solutions. For example, investigating the safety risks associated with thermal runaway is particularly important for lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles.

Thermal Analysis Techniques for Battery Analysis

Thermal analysis techniques play a vital role in the successful research and development of advanced battery technology. They are also ideal for carrying out routine quality control checks on finished products. The four main techniques of DSC, TGA, TMA, and DMA are particularly effective for investigating temperature-dependent effects such as glass transition, crystallization, melting behavior, purity, visco-elastic behavior, expansion, shrinkage, and decomposition. Evolved gas analysis combined with TGA can also provide important information regarding the products of decomposition.
