PLUS Supermarket Case Study

PLUS van Reijen, Veldhoven

André van Reijen renovated his PLUS supermarket from the ground up in 2011, making it a model operation in terms of sustainability. Indeed, his goal with the revised design is to save up to 30% of energy. In pursuing this goal, Van Reijen relies on energy-saving weighing technology from METTLER TOLEDO – and uses the scales to communicate his store's new eco image in a way that customers can understand.

"Our philosophy is to be a service supermarket," comments van Reijen following the renovation work. With the new store concept, he is focusing on distancing himself from the competition by offering top quality, sustainability, and service. In many sections, including the bakery and butcher's counter, the goods are processed directly in the store and sold prepackaged on self-service shelves. PC scales from METTLER TOLEDO's UC Evo Line are used at the service counters, for pre-packaging, and in the self-service area. The modern, open atmosphere and a focus on both service and environmental friendliness are making the PLUS supermarket the number one address for quality food in Veldhoven.

Scales: economical and powerful

The PLUS store in Veldhoven is pursuing its ambitious sustainability goals down to the very last detail. A new, ultramodern CO2-based cooling system ensures correct temperatures in the refrigerated sections. Not only does this technology require less energy to achieve the same cooling, it also uses simple CO2 in place of the greenhouse gas CFC, which is over 1000 times more harmful. André van Reijen: "The energy costs here in Holland are constantly increasing. With our renovation work, we were keen to achieve genuine energy savings of 25% to 30%."

André van Reijen is consistent in his approach to saving energy, also when it comes to the weighing technology his store employs. Having already been a METTLER TOLEDO customer since 1998, he decided to go with counter and self-service scales from the new METTLER TOLEDO UC Evo Line when renovating his supermarket. The PC scales in the UC Evo Line use the latest technology with power-saving, high-performance components such as the bright LED backlight displays and do not require fans, since excess heat is dissipated via the casing. Power-saver and standby modes offer additional energy consumption savings and prevent scales from unintentionally consuming power when not in use, such as through the night.
